Use a Plunger

The first step in clearing a sluggish drain is to attempt using a plunger. A plunger is a reliable tool for simple do-it-yourself fixes. It creates suction, which can dislodge the clog and push it through the system. Sink drains can be cleared with a cup plunger. Begin by removing any excess water from the sink or tub, then take out the drain cover. Place the plunger cup over the drain and press down firmly to create a seal. Pump vigorously several times before lifting up quickly. Repeat for about a minute, which should be enough to dislodge any clogs.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

If the plunger fails, a homemade solution of vinegar and dry baking soda can be used. This is a natural and safe way to break up clogs in drains. Pour one-third of a cup to one cup of baking soda into the drain, allowing it to go down as far as possible. Pour in an equal amount of vinegar, and the mixture will bubble and foam as it works to clear the clog. Leave the solution for 10 to 15 minutes before running hot water (not boiling water) into the drain. This should clear any remaining clogs and debris. If the first attempt fails, repeat several times until all particles are gone.

Removing Hair Clump

Hair particles are a common cause of clogs. To remove any tangled clumps of hair, bend a wire coat hanger into a hook or use a drain snake or plumber’s auger. Carefully insert the hook into the drain, fishing out any built-up hair clumps along the way.

The P-trap is a curved section of pipe located just under the sink, where most clogs occur in bathroom and kitchen sinks. Particles such as hair, dirt, jewelry, and grease can get stuck in the P-trap and cause clogs.  This solution is not recommended that you do it yourself, but instead hire a trained plumber who will know how to complete this process correctly without damaging your property.

The process involves turning off the water to the affected sink and placing a bucket beneath the area to catch any water or debris that may be released during the process. There are two slip nuts connecting the trap to the wall and sink drain. Loosen these and pull it out carefully. Clean any debris or buildup in the area, then reassemble the pieces and turn back on the water supply.

Boiling water is the easiest and most convenient way to clear a clogged drain, but it doesn’t work for all types of clogs. It is great for clearing grease, soap residue, and food particles. Clear any excess water from the sink and boil a large pot or kettle of water, slowly pouring it into the drain. Allow the hot water to sit in the sink or tub for a few minutes before running any cold water through. Repeat this process several times. The heat should be enough to dissolve any debris, grease, or soap scum that may be causing the clog.

You can alternate between pouring just boiling water and boiling water mixed with 1/3 cup of dish detergent. The detergent will help break down grease, fat, and oil that have built up in the pipes. For very tough clogs, use this method several times in combination with plunging before seeing results.
