Hydro Jetting FAQs

Hydro jetting is a great tool that plumbers use to clean out clogged pipes. If you have ever used a pressure washer to clean your house or deck, you may be familiar with the concept. Hydro jetting is sort of like pressure washing for your pipes. It uses a high-pressured stream of water to force clogs out of pipes. If you have a clog in your pipes and a plunger or plumber’s snake can’t handle the job, the hydro jet may do the trick. For some more information on hydro jetting, check out these FAQs.

Q. What is hydro jetting?

A. Hydro jetting is a method that uses high-pressured jets of water to clean blockages and debris out of plumbing lines. It is similar in concept to a power washer for your plumbing system. The hydro jet consists of a hose, a nozzle, a large tank of water, and a motor that pressurizes the water.

Q. How much pressure does a hydro jet use?

A. Hydro jets use upwards of 4,000 PSI with a flow rate of 18 gpm. This is classified as ultra-high pressure. Hydro jets can clean out drains from 1 ½ to 18 inches in diameter and up to 700 feet long.

Q. How does hydro jetting work?

A. Typically, the hydro jet is inserted into the opening to the sewer line, also known as the cleanout. The hydro jet sprays a strong stream of water that works together with gravity to push any debris or clogs downstream and clear of the drainage path.

Q. When should I use a hydro jet?

A. When you have a clogged line, the first line of defense is a plunger or a plumber’s snake. When those methods don’t work, the hydro jet is the next best step. Roots in the sewer lines and other clogs are sometimes more than a snake can handle, but the hydro jet can attack these clogs with no problem. Hydro jets can also be used for maintenance to clean out drains before a clog becomes a problem.

Q. What are the advantages of using a hydro jet?

A. Hydro jetting offers serious power against clogs. When you are dealing with sewer lines, tree roots can grow into the pipes and create clogs. Other drain cleaning methods can’t always get rid of stubborn roots. Hydro jetting has the power that it takes to eliminate stubborn roots and cut through clogs. Hydro jetting is the most efficient way to clean out clogged drains.

Q. Will the pressure from hydro jetting damage my drains?

A. It’s very unlikely that hydro jetting will damage your drains. Most homes now have plastic pipes, which are quite sturdy and won’t be damaged by a hydro jet. If an older home has cast iron pipes that are already quite corroded, it is possible that hydro jetting could exacerbate the existing damage. A normal pipe will withstand hydro jetting with no trouble at all.

Q. Will the hydro jet cut through my plastic pipes?

A. Hydro jets use extremely high water pressure. The employees of Scott English Plumbing are well-trained and experienced in using a hydro jet so that the clogs are removed from your drains, but the pipes themselves are never damaged.
